British firms 'set to miss out on wind farm transport projects'

British logistics firms are set to miss out on major transport contracts as a result of a disputed loophole in European Union law, a leading trade body has claimed.

According to the Road Haulage Association (RHA), the transport for several giant new wind farms in the UK looks likely to be done by foreign hauliers.

The organisation said a loophole in the Combined Transport Directive legislation means large components could be transported by unlicensed foreign trucks.

RHA director of policy Jack Semple said this would represent "a massive misuse" of the directive, calling for the government to put a block on such activity.

"British transport companies are heavily regulated for road safety purposes," he commented, adding that they have "the expertise and equipment" to do the job.

"It is scandalous that the wind power sector should be by-passing them to bring in foreign companies that operate without a UK licence," Mr Semple said.

Earlier this week, the RHA reminded hauliers and logistics firms of the importance of driver training and safety to the success of any transport enterprise.
