'Business champion' Atkins helps keep drivers safe

Transport planning bosses keen to improve driver safety might look to the example of one high-performing company.

Engineering and design consultancy Atkins has been named a "business champion" by a government-backed campaign which aims to keep occupational drivers safe.

The firm, which operates a 3,250-strong fleet of vehicles, has introduced a new Safe Operating System (SOS) to help cut the number of employees killed or injured on the roads.

It encourages drivers to log their journey times and details with a central control room and carries out checks on those who take to the roads alone to help reduce risk.

Meanwhile, the company has also introduced its own transport seminars offering training to commercial vehicle drivers, as well as an intranet e-learning module targeted at employees who drive for a living.

Neil Thomas, group managing director of Atkins' Highways and Transportation business, said the company was delighted to have received recognition for its efforts.

"About 90% of all accidents are caused by the unsafe acts of people and, as such, Atkins concentrates on behaviour and attitudes," he added.

Last week, road safety charity Brake urged fleet managers to tackle the problem of ill-fitting head restraints in company vehicles in order to improve the safety of their staff.
