Commercial vehicle production recorded its smallest month-on-month fall in more than a year during November, but the market remains some way off a recovery, figures show.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), output fell by 16 per cent compared with the previous months, marking the lowest drop in 14 months.
However, production remains down nearly 60 per cent on the year-to-date, with experts anticipating another tough and uncertain year both at home and abroad.
SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said weak demand in key sectors of the economy, together with a lack of business confidence across the UK, is stalling any recovery in output.
With production volumes having fallen every month since September last year, ministers would have to do more to help bolster the industry, he claimed.
"It is essential that governments continue to sustain and strengthen economic recovery, improving access to credit and encouraging investment in new technologies and products," Mr Everitt said.
The latest sales figures from manufacturer Volvo Trucks made for similar reading, with the total number of deliveries in November down 16 per cent on the previous month and 59 per cent on the same period last year.
