Logistics firms and transport planning bosses are unlikely to return to the commercial vehicle market until business confidence begins to pick up, it has been claimed.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), new truck registrations received a temporary boost in September as both the new '59 plate and the end of the Euro 4 and 5 reduced pollution incentives made it a good time to buy.
The total number of sales for the month reached 6,522 - up 5.4 per cent from August.
However, new registrations remain down 28.3 per cent for the year as operators continue to focus on cost reduction during the current financial climate.
SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: "Business confidence remains fragile in the commercial vehicle sector, despite an increase in registrations at the heavy end of the market."
He added that the temporary rise in sales shows the effect a small incentive can have, but does not yet signal an end to the impact of the recession.
The SMMT last month called for urgent action to be taken to address business confidence and encourage investment in new vehicles.
