Transport planning bosses may stand to benefit from the decision to introduce an automated payment system for the London Congestion Charge, it has been claimed.
Mayor Boris Johnson announced plans for the new scheme yesterday (Thursday October 15th) as part of his new transport strategy for the capital.
The system will mean that all freight operators will now be able to avoid unfair fines that arise as a result of innocent mistakes, many of which lead to hefty administrative costs.
Commenting on the decision, the Freight Transport Association's head of policy for London Gordon Telling said he was pleased to see commercial vehicle operators afforded a discount for moving goods through the capital.
He added that the new automated payment system will allow smaller companies to benefit from the same savings that were previously only available to larger operators.
"This is particularly helpful when Congestion Charge payments slip through the net and cause significant costs to smaller firms that are under pressure from all sides," Mr Telling said.
Earlier this month, the organisation also welcomed government plans to scrap the southbound toll at the Dartford/Thurrock Crossing in Kent.
It said the decision would help cut delivery times and improve cost reduction for fleet operators.
