Effective transport planning 'can help cut costs'

Logistics bosses and transport planning chiefs across the UK could improve cost reduction by investing in a good fleet management system, it has been claimed.

According to organisers of the Commercial Vehicle Operator Show, which will take place in April next year, such technology can offer considerable cost savings for companies.

However well maintained or efficient a vehicle fleet may be, they pointed out that drivers who "take the long way home" will only increase fuel bills and operating costs.

However, by implementing an effective fleet management and route planning system, this problem can be easily overcome.

As well as reducing mileage and slashing the cost of fuel, the technology will also benefit the environment by helping businesses to cut their carbon footprint, organisers added.

"Wherever your customers take you, the going will be easier for the local knowledge that a good route planning and logistics system offers," they said.

Earlier this month, the Freight Transport Association encouraged fleet bosses to sign up for its remaining Transport Manager 2009 seminars, which are running around the UK.

The group said the sessions will help keep managers abreast of the latest developments and allow them to plan effectively and efficiently for the future.
