FTA: Test centre closures 'putting added pressure on transport operators'

The closure of several lorry driving test centres across the UK is putting greater pressure on transport bosses and logistics firms, it has been claimed.

According to the Freight Transport Association (FTA), many commercial vehicle operators are being left with little choice but to travel long distances to fulfil their legal training duties.

The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency has shut down three test centres this year, in Cornwall, Cheshire and Wales, with a fourth in West Yorkshire set to close in early 2010.

The FTA says the closures have made it more expensive for logistics firms to locate suitable testing facilities, putting added pressure on them during the downturn.

James Hookham, managing director of policy and communications at the organisation, said it is important to make sure the closures do not jeopardise safety on the roads.

"The bottom line is road safety and, especially in this heavy recession, we should not be making it harder and more expensive for honest, compliant operators to meet their roadworthiness commitments," he added.

Earlier this year, the Road Haulage Association revealed similar concerns, claiming the move presents an additional worry that hauliers "can well do without".ADNFCR-1654-ID-19428509-ADNFCR
