FTA calls for bridge toll consistency

Government measures to help improve cost reduction for businesses and logistics firms should be implemented on a national scale, it has been claimed.

According to the Freight Transport Association (FTA), ministers' lack of consistency with regards to bridge tolls across the country is causing anger among some transport bosses.

Transport minister Sadiq Khan this week announced that the Humber Bridge Company would be granted a £6 million grant, just months after freezing the tolls.

While this will come as a boost to operators who use the link, the government has been reluctant to take similar action for the Severn Crossing.

The FTA claimed this left companies operating across the Anglo-Welsh border facing tens of thousands of pounds in toll charges each year, which was inexcusable during the recession.

FTA policy manager for Wales Ian Gallagher said: "The government's commitment to reducing business costs is welcome, but it has to be applied across the board.

"The recession is not discriminating by region, and neither should the government," he added.

Earlier this month, the government also revealed plans to scrap the southbound toll at the Dartford/Thurrock Crossing in Kent, which is used by thousands of commercial vehicles each day.
