FTA launches new road transport law guide

Transport planning bosses are being urged to read up on the latest rules and regulations to avoid any unwanted fines or accidents in 2010.

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has launched its Yearbook of Road Transport Law 2010 guide, aimed at keeping operators up to date with all areas of legislation.

Written and compiled by the organisation's team of transport law experts, the guide includes full details on health and safety rules, as well as new driver training requirements and qualifications.

As of September 2009, transport planning bosses have been required to make sure HGV drivers undertake regular operational training on fuel consumption, loading and other skills.

However, the FTA is keen to point out that this training, known as the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence, is needed as well as and not instead of an appropriate vocational driving licence.

The guide, available from the FTA's website, also provides details of the new fixed-penalty system introduced in May last year, together with various other law changes.

Last month, the FTA hit out at the "unreasonably high tolls" charged for lorries crossing the River Severn, calling for politicians to take action to help reduce the burden on businesses.
