FTA launches van industry code of conduct

Transport planning bosses are being urged to sign up to a new Van Excellence Code which aims to improve safety and self-regulation in the van fleet sector.

According to the Freight Transport Association (FTA), the number of vans on UK roads has grown by almost 40 per cent over the course of the past decade.

The group claimed the sector therefore warrants serious self-regulation and has sought to establish a realistic code of conduct that will benefit the industry.

FTA's Van Excellence Code seeks to share and formalise best practice techniques already in use among leading companies in the sector and improve performance in key aspects such as driver behaviour and vehicle safety.

Richard White, FTA's van project leader, said the new code will help boost safety levels and promote professionalism in the industry, providing a clear set of standards for all operators to work by.

"By seizing this initiative the sector can help to forge a greener, safer and more professional future," he added.

This week, the latest British Car Auctions Pulse Report showed that average used van values reached the second highest point on record in March as strong demand continued to fuel price growth.
