FTA welcomes Forth Crossing announcement

Plans to construct a new bridge over the Forth Crossing have been welcomed by the Freight Transport Association (FTA).

In news that may be of interest to those involved in supply chain transport planning, the group said such a move was essential to the infrastructure of the surrounding area.

According to the FTA, problems regarding the state of the current bridge have been well documented and if some of the work currently being undertaken is unsuccessful, this could severely affect the delivery of goods.

Gavin Scott, head of policy for the organisation's activities in Scotland, said that although it was pleasing to see plans were on course, it was now "absolutely vital" funding was secured for a new bridge.

"With the margin of safety rapidly diminishing, goods vehicles could face a real problem and be left with no means of crossing the river," he concluded.

Last month, the trade body urged chancellor Alistair Darling to reconsider plans for fuel duty increases that would impact the UK logistics sector.
