Labour's plans to improve rail freight capacity are a pleasant and welcome surprise for the logistics sector, according to one industry group.
The Freight Transport Association said it was pleased that the party had recognised the value of logistics in its manifesto by committing to improving rail transport.
Spokesperson for the organisation Jo Tanner said the move was "reassuring", suggesting that Labour's rivals may now follow suit.
"Our hope is now that the other parties vying for votes will show similar forethought," she stated.
However, Ms Tanner warned that the high level of spending required for high-speed rail must not take away from vital funding for other projects.
She also welcomed Labour's pledge to tackle road congestion by introducing managed motorways and hard-shoulder running, but claimed that these should only be seen as short-term measures.
"Intelligent infrastructure investment is needed if we are to meet the ongoing capacity and environmental challenges," Ms Tanner said.
"A sticking plaster solution will not cure this particular patient."
Ms Tanner's comments come after the FTA recently called for politicians to increase support for the logistics sector, which forms the backbone of British industry, the Financial Times reported.
