FTA welcomes UK lorry parking strategy

The government's long-awaited national lorry parking strategy has been welcomed by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) as good news for drivers and transport planning bosses.

Transport minister Paul Clark this week outlined a new national action plan to improve the provision of safe and secure parking facilities across the UK.

As part of the strategy, the Department for Transport is committed to increasing the number of new truck stops and providing guidance to councillors and freight operators.

Responding to the announcement, FTA's head of road traffic management policy Malcolm Bingham said the plans would benefit all road users.

"Commercial vehicle drivers are now that much closer to having a choice of decent, safe and well-equipped parking options when they are delivering across England - and well-rested drivers mean safer roads for all of us," he commented.

Mr Bingham added that employers must also play their part by using best practice when selecting facilities for drivers who are away from base.

He said it is important that both the government and the industry "grasp this opportunity with both hands" to make the strategy work.
