FTA welcomes abandonment of freight transport data capture

Transport planning chiefs and logistics bosses may welcome a government decision to scrap plans for closer controls on goods movement within the European Union.

The Home Office and the UK Border Agency opted not to grant police the power to collect data on individual freight consignments being transported in the region.

Responding to the decision, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) said the news would come as a major relief for transport managers and HGV operators across the UK.

It said the proposed plans were both unnecessary and highly impractical, and would have resulted in major cost increases for firms looking to do business out of the UK.

Christopher Snelling, head of supply chain policy at the organisation, said: "We welcome this decision by the government.

"The abandonment of these ill-thought-out plans is a victory for common sense and an efficient supply chain."

Last week, the FTA also welcomed plans to introduce an automated payment system for the London Congestion Charge, which it said would help costs for logistics firms.

The group claimed the new technology will ensure freight operators avoid heavy and unfair fines that often arise as a result of innocent mistakes.
