FTA's Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme wins backing from Adonis

A new scheme from the Freight Transport Association (FTA) designed to help reduce road travel emissions has won backing from the secretary of state for transport.

Lord Adonis confirmed the department of transport's (DfT) support for the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme (LCRS), which aims to reduce the logistics sector's carbon footprint.

The industry currently accounts for almost a third of overall domestic transport emissions and the FTA is keen to encourage firms to tackle the problem.

As part of the LCRS, companies will be committed to reporting their fuel data to the FTA, allowing it to analyse the overall carbon footprint of the logistics sector.

Rachael Dillon, FTA's climate change manager, said the organisation was "grateful" to the DfT for pledging its support to the scheme.

"Together with the DfT we will develop a robust and consistent carbon measurement and reporting method that will be fair, accurate and eminently useful in the interests of mitigating the sector’s environmental impact," she added.

Next month, the FTA will hold its annual Urban Logistics Conference in London, addressing current issues and best practice affecting urban freight deliveries.
