The quality of a city's transport infrastructure has a significant effect on its ability to attract investment, a new study has found.
A survey from Invest Thames Gateway reveals that nearly two-thirds (63 per cent) of decision makers believe transport is "essential" to attracting an increasingly mobile workforce.
The report, entitled Smart Connection: The Essential Role of Transport for Borderless Business, found that more than three-quarters (80 per cent) of respondents believe quality transport connections are more important for organisations during the recession.
Professor Austin Smith, head of the department of transport studies at Westminster University, said transport infrastructure represents the future for both business locations and companies.
"Sophisticated and effective transport networks translate as accessibility and connectivity, making borderless business possible," he said.
Gareth John, managing director of Invest Thames Gateway, added that transport will continue to play a crucial role in the future economic success of locations.
Campaign for Better Transport recently called on the government to improve transport provision across the UK.
