Government must commit to logistics sector, says FTA

The government must commit to the logistics sector to secure a safer, greener and more prosperous future for the UK and its supply chain, it has been claimed.

According to the Freight Transport Association (FTA), too many politicians are failing to tap into the industry's "huge potential" to save money, improve efficiency and save lives.

The organisation outlined five key commitments ministers must make in order to safeguard the future of UK businesses and the environment.

It listed investment in UK transport infrastructure, greater incentives for low-carbon firms and a revision of the tax regime for commercial vehicles as vital considerations.

FTA's Jo Tanner said: "We all want safer roads, greener business practices and a more efficient supply chain.

"It is time the powers that be started to listen more closely to the logistics sector to help make the UK all that it can be."

The call comes after a report by the British Chambers of Commerce last week claimed continued investment in transport infrastructure should be made a priority, despite the UK's fragile public finances.

It said such spending could boost the British economy by £85 billion over the next five years.
