Government plans action to tackle traffic noise

UK authorities are examining new evidence provided to help reduce the impact of noise from road and rail traffic in urban areas.

The report lists 23 target areas close to major roads and railways across the country where traffic noise is thought to cause a disruption to the lives of local residents.

Authorities will now investigate these regions to see what further noise mitigation measures can be implemented.

They can propose steps such as sound barriers alongside roads, lower speed limits for vehicles and improved road surfaces, as well as installing double glazing in affected homes.

Environment minister Jim Fitzpatrick said: "We can't just turn down the volume along major transport routes, which millions of people use every day, but we're asking for local solutions to make sure the effects of noise are properly managed."

The government also published its Noise Policy Statement for England yesterday, which sets out ministers' long-term vision for managing noise and improving quality of life.

Last week, transport minister Paul Clark said a focus on quiet night-time freight deliveries could help remove thousands of lorries from the roads during peak hours, reducing disruption for local residents and improving efficiency for businesses.
