Transport planning bosses and logistics firms may be facing up to a hectic festive period, but drivers will at least face fewer roadworks on the motorways this Christmas.
The Highways Agency has announced plans to suspend or complete two-thirds of its current projects during the holiday period in an effort to improve winter travel.
As many as 35 sets of roadworks on motorways and A roads have already been completed, with a further 44 due to be put on hold until after the Christmas and New Year period.
Derek Turner, Highways Agency director for network operations, said the decision will make life easier for all drivers, whether visiting friends and family or making vital deliveries.
"We have removed as many sets of roadworks as we can and continue to provide drivers with up-to-the-minute journey planning advice," he commented.
According to intelligent driving services provider Trafficmaster, journey times could be more than doubled across many UK routes due to increased congestion this Christmas.
The firm expects December 18th and 23rd to be two of the busiest days over the holiday period, with commercial, commuter and leisure traffic reaching peak levels.
