UK supermarket chain Iceland Frozen Foods has ordered 70 new Volvo FM trucks to help deliver top value to its customers this Christmas.

The vehicles, supplied by dealer Thomas Hardie Commercials, will be used by the retailer to transport goods to its 700-plus nationwide stores ahead of the festive shopping rush.

The deal means around 60 per cent of Iceland's fleet now comprises Volvo trucks, helping the firm to make savings in the supply chain that can then be passed on to consumers.

Contracts manager David Hill said: "We offer everyday great value to our customers, who demand quality products at competitive prices.

"Volvo and Thomas Hardie have responded to our need for value in the supply chain with a competitive contract hire package."

Thomas Hardie is also providing Iceland's team of driving instructors with driver development advanced fuel economy training in an effort to help the firm improve its cost reduction in the long term.

Last month, Volvo's 11-litre FM model came out top in Fleet Transport Magazine's Irish Truck of the Year 2010 on account of its low emissions and high fuel efficiency.
