Keeping on top of tyre pressures 'could cut fuel costs'

Transport planning bosses could take a major step towards improving their cost reduction strategies simply by ensuring their vehicle's tyres are fully inflated.

According to British organisation TyreSafe, UK motorists waste a combined £0.7 billion worth of fuel every year as a result of driving on under-inflated tyres.

With petrol prices having reached new all-time highs of close to 120 pence a litre this month, the group is urging people to take action in order to cut costs.

"The recent rises in petrol prices are hitting drivers hard, yet many are failing to make one very simple check and adjustment that could save them hundreds of pounds over the year," said TyreSafe chairman Stuart Jackson.

He added that taking just a few minutes once every month to check tyre pressures would result in a noticeable reduction in fuel costs for many motorists.

Transport firms and drivers would also benefit from longer tyre life, increased safety and lower levels of CO2 emissions, Mr Jackson stated.

According to the AA, the average price of petrol in the UK reached 119.9 pence a litre this month, eclipsing the previous record high of 119.7 pence set in July 2008.
