Logistics firms hit by late payments

Tuesday, 09/6/2009 04:37
A financial provider has expressed concern at the number of customers that are failing to pay transport and logistics businesses.

Companies which control the supply chain strategy of other businesses are losing out on hundreds of millions of pounds each day, Barclays Local Business stated.

This, it said, is because many suppliers and customers are not paying them on time, which is therefore having financial consequences on firms in the logistics sector.

Indeed, figures show that the average logistics company is receiving their money almost two weeks late.

John Davis, marketing director of Barclays Local Business, commented: "The businesses that will survive and thrive during the downturn are taking late payments seriously."

He added that it is concerning that the number of late payments is on the rise, particularly as the UK has recently seen some positive economic signs.

In fact, Bank of England deputy governor Paul Tucker this week told the Evening Standard that confidence in the businesses sector has improved slightly in recent weeks.
