Transport planning bosses are being invited to sign up for a new initiative designed to help cut the carbon footprint of the UK's logistics sector.
The Freight Transport Association's (FTA) Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme aims to produce an accurate record of the industry's carbon dioxide emissions.
Firms that sign up will be required to submit their fuel data to the organisation for analysis, giving policymakers a reliable base of evidence for future carbon reduction strategies.
Stewart Oades, FTA president, said despite the lack of progress at last month's climate change summit, the UK logistics industry is still committed to cutting its emissions.
"We need to start making intelligent decisions if we want to make a meaningful reduction in our carbon output without doing irreparable damage to British business along the way," he stated.
In order to do so, it is important to determine exactly what proportion of carbon emissions the industry is responsible for first, he added.
Late last year, the FTA called for the government to provide incentives for logistics firms to reduce their carbon footprint such as lower tolls for greener and more efficient vehicles.
