More must be done to help ease the "significant risk to road safety" posed by foreign commercial vehicles operating in the UK, it has been claimed.
According to the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee (PAC), the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSPA) needs to step up enforcement on foreign HGVs.
The number of dangerous vehicles and drivers removed from the roads has risen by over a quarter in recent years, but further work is still needed, the group said.
Edward Leigh MP, chairman of the PAC, said VOSPA can do more to modernise its working practices and technology in order to tackle the danger.
"We are concerned, in particular, that the Department for Transport and VOSPA have not done enough to address the risks posed by foreign HGVs," he commented.
Mr Leigh added that these make up only three per cent of lorries on UK roads, but cause ten per cent of all accidents involving lorries.
The PAC report was welcomed by the Road Haulage Association, which said it was "particularly encouraged" by the call for stronger enforcement for foreign vehicles.
