New Workington road bridge opens to traffic
Transport firms operating across Cumbria could find their journeys become a little easier after the temporary new Workington road bridge was opened to traffic.
The crossing, which was developed to replace the original bridge that was destroyed during last year's severe floods in the area, was opened yesterday (April 21st).
International logistics firm Eddie Stobart became the first company to use the new transport link after winning a charity auction run by Workington Rotary Club.
One of the firm's trucks passed over the bridge yesterday en route to a local Tesco store, loaded with goods for delivery.
William Stobart, the company's chief operating officer, said Eddie Stobart was proud to have played a small part in such a "fantastic" project.
"Life on the road in West Cumbria should get a lot easier from now on, which comes as a relief to us all," he commented.
"This new bridge will save a round-trip of 36 miles when travelling from the north to the south side of Workington."
Earlier this month, chancellor Alistair Darling outlined plans to invest £100 million to help improve the condition of local roads and highways that were damaged by the severe weather this winter.
