HGV drivers across the UK could benefit from the launch of a new charity aimed at bringing the haulage industry together and supporting workers.
The Professional Drivers Foundation has been established by the UK Professional Drivers Association (PDA) to help promote the welfare of lorry drivers.
It has already gained backing from British motor ace Steve Parrish, winner of numerous British, European and World Motorcycle and Truck Racing titles.
The organisation will provide both financial and advisory support to anyone holding a vocational driving licence, particularly those who have suffered injuries while driving or delivering.
PDA founder and spokesperson Pat Nicholson said the charity will focus primarily on the welfare of lorry drivers.
"It is not a well-paid industry and entails long hours with many of the workforce being away four nights a week and sleeping in their vehicles," she added.
The launch of the charity came as the Road Haulage Association issued a warning to drivers and transport planning bosses after a spate of recent thefts.
Criminals have targeted a number of transport depots, in some cases cutting through security fences to steal batteries worth up £350 a tonne.
