New road safety plans put emphasis on logistics industry

Transport planning bosses may welcome a new report that aims to increase road safety and traffic flows in Wales, with a particular emphasis on the logistics industry.

The publication, produced by the National Assembly for Wales' Enterprise and Learning Committee, puts forward a number of recommendations on how to make roads safer.

Among the suggestions are several ideas already posited by the freight industry, including off-peak deliveries and dedicated truck parking areas.

Welcoming the report, the Freight Transport Association's (FTA) head of policy for Wales Stephen Kelly said the Assembly's desire to improve road safety was "laudable".

"It is pleasing to see that our members' concerns have effectively been rubber-stamped by the Welsh Assembly and that the needs of the logistics industry - and not just those affecting motorists - are being considered," he stated.

His comments come after the FTA recently praised plans to construct a new bridge over the Forth Crossing in Scotland, which it said would be "absolutely vital" to the logistics sector.
