Process improvement 'needed to minimise air cargo risk'

There is a need for process improvement in the air freight transport sector after it was found to contain numerous security shortcomings, reports suggest.

Logistic Manager cited a new study that said certificates and regulations regarding air cargo safety were often problematic.

The research, conducted by the Technische Universitat of Berlin, also found certain EU restrictions delay urgent air freight, which increases costs.

In fact, cost reduction totalling ten per cent of a logistics budget could be made if security requirements were not priced as they are, it discovered.

Markus Wolf, chief executive of study commissioner World Cargo Centre Frankfurt, was quoted by the publication as saying: "The customer must be able to rely on the building satisfying the highest security standards to ensure the maximum protection of staff and freight."

However, 39 per cent of freight handlers and 24 per cent of logistics service providers involved in the survey said they believe air freight centre surveillance technology to be inadequate.

Meanwhile, the Road Haulage Association has called on the chancellor of the exchequer to think again regarding costs for the industry.
