RHA extends training course for truck drivers

Transport planning bosses keen to help keep their employees safe on the roads may be able to take advantage of an ongoing course aimed at improving driver training.

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has revealed plans to extend its Train the Trainer course into next year, with places now available until autumn 2010.

The five-day programme originally launched in 2008 and was intended to run for 12 months, providing a basis for firms to deliver their own in-house training for truck drivers.

However, with more than 500 people already having successfully completed the course, demand for places has shown no sign of letting up, meaning it will now be extended for another year.

Steve Ellis, head of RHA training, said the programme has proved an "outstanding success" and a useful tool for logistics and transport planning chiefs across the country.

"Demand has been so strong that we are booked up well into next year and we have now taken the decision to run it on until autumn 2010," he added.

The news comes after the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents recently claimed that all logistics companies should provide tailored training and assessment for each individual driver to help keep employees safe on the roads.
