RHA slams plans for fuel duty increase

The Road Haulage Association has slammed plans to increase fuel duty next month, branding the proposed hike as "grossly unfair" to the haulage industry.

According to the organisation, the planned increase of 2.5 per cent on April 1st could mean the end of the road for many transport firms in Britain.

With UK hauliers already paying up to six times more than their European counterparts on fuel duty rates, the group said a further hike would place a significant burden on the logistics industry.

RHA chief executive Geoff Dunning said: "Of course we understand that in order to regain economic stability, certain sacrifices have to be made.

"But it seems grossly unfair that the UK haulage industry, the one sector on which the rest of UK plc is so dependent, should be the one to have its throat cut in this way."

Last month, the Freight Transport Association claimed ministers should provide a boost for British businesses and transport firms by reducing fuel duty, claiming the recent run of tax hikes had been one of the main contributor to last year's rise in inflation.
