RHA wants greater clarity on fuel duty

The UK's major political parties must provide greater clarity on the issue of road fuel duty in the lead up to general election, it has been claimed.

According to the Road Haulage Association, party leaders should be more open about their plans for fuel duty, which is a major issue for road users.

Geoff Dunning, chief executive of the group, said Labour's stance on the matter is "pretty clear", with a series of further hikes planned over the next year.

However, he said it is far from certain that either the Conservatives or the Liberal Democrats would do anything other than continue to increase duty levels.

"Fuel duty is an important political issue for all road users and a vital one for the road haulage industry," Mr Dunning stated.

"Voters should have a clear idea where the major parties stand."

The call comes after chancellor Alistair Darling increased duty by 1p per litre in last month's Budget, with plans for further increases in October this year and January 2011.

However, critics said the decision to stagger the rise would only postpone the inevitable detrimental effect on the road haulage industry.
