Road pricing 'would help ease congestion'

Road pricing may be the only viable and effective method of reducing congestion levels on the UK's roads, according to a leading road safety charity.

Kevin Delaney, head of road safety at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, said congestion charges may be the only way to deal with current traffic problems.

He was speaking in response to a new report by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) which said "radical changes" were needed to help cut congestion.

"The only real way of managing traffic is actually road pricing in some way or another," Mr Delaney argued.

However, he said the government is likely to have "a real problem" selling the idea to voters, suggesting that road pricing must be done locally if it is to have an effect.

"There have to be commitments that the money raised will be put back into local projects, safety improvements, public transport improvements, et cetera," Mr Delaney insisted.

According to the CBI report, road congestion already costs the UK economy an estimated £8 billion each year, a figure which is set to more than double by 2025.
