Satnav named motoring moment of the decade

The introduction of the mass-market satellite navigation system has been hailed as the greatest motoring moment of the decade.

Experts at Carsite.co.uk named the technology as the most significant development of the 21st century so far for drivers, helping to improve transport planning and cut journey times.

The website also listed the M6 Toll and London Congestion Charge as two significant advances in helping to reduce traffic and make life easier for motorists.

However, the introduction of the satnav in 2000 remained the number one moment, revolutionising transport planning and navigation on the roads.

Carsite's Alistair Jeff said that despite the odd hiccup that has seen drivers directed into fields or lorries sent down narrow country roads, the devices have been hugely successful.

"In most cases they're entirely accurate and a fantastic gadget that has totally changed the way we get around," he commented.

"You realise how significant an invention is when you can't imagine making a complicated journey without one."

Last month, the Freight Transport Association announced the availability the new TomTom Go 7000 satnav unit, which is designed specifically to cater for lorry drivers by avoiding narrow roads, low bridges and unsuitable routes.
