Severn Tolls place 'unfair burden' on hauliers

UK hauliers doing business in Wales are continuing to suffer from the "unfair burden" imposed by the Severn Bridge toll, it has been claimed.

The Freight Transport Association said many companies have been forced to pay out tens of thousands of pounds for using the crossing, creating added pressure during the recession.

Despite frequent industry calls for something to be done to tackle the problem, the Welsh Assembly Government (Wag) has shown no understanding of the situation, it claimed.

The tolls on the Severn are currently the highest in the UK and fees are set to increase again in the New Year.

Ian Gallagher, FTA's policy manager for Wales, said the "disproportionate cost burden" imposed on firms operating in the country must be addressed.

"The Wag's apparent apathy over this issue is at odds with what should be their main concern; building an economically strong Wales."

Earlier this month, the FTA welcomed plans by Welsh ministers to improve the availability and safety of overnight parking on the country's trunk roads.

As part of the proposals, the Wag intends to increase the number of secure truck stops available and improve the quality of the facilities.
