Skidding on wet roads 'is drivers' worst nightmare'

Transport planning bosses may wish to take extra care to ensure the safety of their drivers as the winter weather continues to wreak havoc on the UK's roads.

According to a poll conducted for tyre retail website mytyres.co.uk, more than half of British drivers cite skidding on wet roads as their "worst nightmare" behind the wheel.

More than 55 per cent said they most feared spinning out of control, ahead of breaking down on the road, which featured as the second biggest concern.

With the heavy increase in rainfall making surfaces particularly slippery in recent weeks, the retailer warned that the worry felt by many motorists is a very real one.

It advised transport planning bosses and drivers across the country to make sure they take precautions by keeping a regular check on the condition of their tyres.

Experts recommend that tyres should be replaced once they wear down to around 3mm and replacements should not be delayed as a way of saving money.

The advice follows a recent survey by Glass's Guide which revealed that nearly half of British drivers have deferred spending on repairs and parts for their vehicles as a result of the recession.
