Transport firms urged to adopt truck visibility code

Wednesday, 28/4/2010 01:06
Transport planning bosses across the UK are being urged to sign up to a voluntary code of practice designed to keep drivers safe on the roads.

Road safety charity Brake wants all companies with trucks in their fleets to commit to the guidelines issued by campaign group Reflect.

The code encourages firms to fit retro-reflective markings to all HGV vehicles in an effort to increase visibility and improve safety for all road users.

Although the government does not plan to make these markings mandatory for all new HGVs until July 2011, the campaign is calling on companies to take the initiative.

Ellen Booth, Brake's campaigns officer, said: "The safety merits of these markings are clear and there is nothing to stop companies operating trucks voluntarily fitting these markings now."

Last month, Brake backed a report by the House of Commons Committee of Public Accounts which raised concerns over the safety of foreign trucks on UK roads.

The document called for tougher rules to help reduce the number of unsafe overseas drivers and vehicles in the country.
