Transport planning chiefs may need to take extra care to ensure their drivers stay safe on the roads this month ahead of an expected leap in the number of accidents.
According to accident management specialists Accident Exchange, the crash rate on UK roads is likely to surge during October as motorists fail to get to grips with the wet weather.
Based on historic data, the group expects the number of incidents to rise by as much as 15 per cent over the course of the month as a result of the difficult conditions.
Accident Exchange's Gordon Grant said: "October delivers some of the worst driving conditions of the year as the weather changes and the clocks go back, but drivers continue as if they were in the summer months."
He added that motorists should modify their driving styles to suit the more autumnal weather and adopt common sense when facing heavy rainfall and greasy road surfaces.
The warning comes after the Institute of Advanced Motorists issued a similar caution earlier this month, advising drivers to watch out for slippery mud patches on country roads.
