Transport planning: Dartford toll scrappage 'will help reduce costs'

Transport planning bosses may welcome new government plans to scrap the southbound toll at the Dartford/Thurrock Crossing in Kent.

Ministers revealed proposals to stop charging drivers who use the tunnel, which is accessed by thousands of commercial vehicles each day.

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) welcomed the plans, which it said will lead to major transport cost reductions for fleet operators, as well as a drop in delivery times.

Gordon Telling, the group's head of policy for the south-east, stated: "Removing toll plazas - for a crossing that has long-since been paid for anyway - removes a bottleneck that costs businesses hundreds of thousands of pounds a year."

He added that while the northbound toll is effective in helping to regulate the flow of vehicles, there is no need for a similar mechanism to control southbound traffic.

Earlier this month, the FTA suggested that reductions in toll prices should be used as an incentive to encourage greener transport planning among commercial vehicle operators.

He said firms that take steps to monitor and reduce their carbon footprints should be rewarded with lower charges.
