The introduction of digital dashboards to new vehicles could pose a major risk to the safety of drivers across the UK, a leading motoring group has warned.
According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), the devices could encourage people to use the internet or watch videos behind the wheel, distracting them from the road ahead.
Software giants Intel and Google are both said to be considering the development of interactive dashboards, which include ten-inch screens displaying 3D maps and web pages.
Similar systems are also being previewed at trade shows, but Peter Rodger, chief examiner at the IAM, said the impact of the technology could be deadly.
"There is a fine line between providing useful extra information and causing a dangerous distraction. This system appears to cross that line," he commented.
"Viewing things like restaurant reviews and venue information online while driving should be illegal."
Last month, experts at Carsite.co.uk highlighted the introduction of the mass-market satellite navigation system as the greatest motoring moment of the decade.
The website said the technology has helped revolutionise transport planning and navigation on the roads, reducing the stress of long and complicated journeys.
