Transport planning: Experts urge drivers to prepare for winter weather

Friday, 04/12/2009 11:26
Transport planning bosses and drivers across the UK are being warned not to get caught out by the colder weather this winter.

According to breakdown provider Mondial Assistance, the drop in temperatures can make driving conditions hazardous and increase the risk of battery failure and other car troubles.

The group is therefore warning motorists to help reduce the risk of losing valuable time and money stuck at the side of the motorway by taking simple steps to avoid a breakdown.

Lee Taylor, automotive director at Mondial, said: "With a little maintenance, it’s possible to minimise the risk you expose yourself to the open road."

He advised drivers to check their car battery connections are clean, secure and damage-free to reduce the chances of experiencing a false start on the frosty mornings.

Meanwhile, the threat of wet and icy roads means it is more important than ever to ensure tyres are at the correct pressure and legal tread depth to maximise grip, Mr Taylor added.

The warning comes after a poll by tyre retail website mytyres.co.uk revealed that more than half of British motorists consider skidding on wet roads to be their "worst nightmare".
