Transport planning bosses and logistics companies could benefit from major improvements in the safety and fuel efficiency of trucks in the future, a report has claimed.

According to IBM's Global Truck 2020 Study, the sector has faced a series of financial hurdles in recent years, but is determined to transform its image.

The survey, which questioned more than 90 industry executives from 13 different countries, suggested logistics chiefs are keen to reap the benefits of more eco-friendly vehicles.

Sanjay Rishi, vice-president of IBM, said: "Increasingly, fleet owners choose cleaner, more fuel-efficient trucks that also have advanced systems to make transport more efficient."

More than 70 per cent of respondents to the poll indicated their belief that improved technology and smart systems will play a vital role in the future of the logistics industry.

They suggested telematics will be crucial in helping to reduce service time and increase both efficiency and safety.

Last month, commercial vehicle manufacturer Volvo Truck landed two awards for its efforts to help develop fuel-efficient, low-emission vehicles.

It picked up Fleet Transport magazine's Irish Truck of the Year award for its 11-litre FM model, before receiving the Greenfleet Large Goods Vehicle Manufacturer of the Year at a prodigious ceremony in London.
