Transport planning: Motorists urged to watch out for potholes

Tuesday, 05/1/2010 01:32
Motorists have been warned to be aware of the threat posed by "invisible" potholes on the roads this winter as the number of accidents continues to rise.

According to road maintenance campaign website Potholes.co.uk, a growing number of drivers failing to notice water-filled potholes until it is too late, leaving them with hefty repair bills.

The group estimates that Britain's 30 million motorists fork out £1 million a day to cover the damage done by potholes, with the recent cold weather likely to exacerbate the problem.

Duncan McClure Fisher of Warranty Direct, which set up the Potholes.co.uk site, said the icy conditions over the Christmas and New Year period have created new potholes across the country.

"Treacherous ice and snow may be at the forefront of drivers' minds as the main hazard, but potholes are another danger they need to be aware of," he advised.

According to Met Office predictions, the recent cold snap is showing no sign of letting up, with more snow and freezing temperatures expected across much of the UK this week.
