Transport planning: New measures to tackle road works disruption

Transport planning chiefs keen to cut delivery times and improve cost reduction may welcome government plans to ease the disruption caused by road works.

Transport minister Sadiq Khan today (Thursday October 15th) announced a series of tough new measures to ensure improvements are carried out on time and with minimal disruption.

"I have spent a lot of time visiting sites around the country and the impact on traffic is chaotic," he said.

"Road works are stopping buses from running on time, harming local economies because of increased congestion and blocking routes to shops and commercial premises."

To combat the problem, Mr Khan urged councils across the country to increase penalty charges for firms who fail to complete work on time at key transport routes to as much as £25,000 a day.

Companies working in certain parts of the country will also need to apply for permits, which set out conditions on timing and disruption during the improvements.

The move comes after shadow transport secretary Teresa Villiers last week laid out Conservative proposals to help cut congestion on UK roads.

Measures included reducing the number of speed cameras and traffic lights currently operating in the country.ADNFCR-1654-ID-19410473-ADNFCR
