Transport planning officials may back a call from one road safety group for the government to lower the drink-drive limit across the UK.
Charity organisation Brake urged ministers to stop "dragging their heels" and take action in order to reduce the number of accidents and injuries occurring on British roads.
Its call comes after Irish government this week revealed plans to cut the drink-drive limit from its current level of 80mg per 100ml of blood to 50mg.
For learner drivers and people who take to the roads for a living, a lower limit of 20mg will be introduced.
Brake pointed to significant research which shows that drivers with blood alcohol levels between 50mg and 80mg are more than twice as likely to be involved in a fatal accident.
It said: "Brake calls on the UK Government to follow the example of our Irish neighbours by lowering the drink-drive limit and stepping up enforcement of the law."
Earlier this week, Brake's Fleet Safety Forum announced a series of workshops offering advice to transport planning managers on how to prevent whiplash and head injuries to their drivers by ensuring head restraints are properly fitted.
