Transport planning: Van drivers 'spending more time than ever on the roads'

Transport planning bosses and drivers across the logistics industry have been offered a number of tips to ensure they stay safe on the roads.

According to a survey by UK insurance company Swinton, people who drive for work are currently spending more time than ever behind the wheel in an effort to beat the recession.

The firm polled 1,000 van drivers to find out how the crisis has affected their profession, with 59 per cent of those questioned now working more than 50 hours each week.

They admitted to spending hours driving on Britain's motorways in order to help keep businesses afloat during the credit crunch, with some even working through the weekend.

Phil Moss, commercial vehicle insurance manager at Swinton, said it is therefore even more important to make checks on tyre pressures, tread depths and lights, while stopping to take regular rest breaks.

"Any driver who feels tired while driving should pull over in a safe place and get some rest until they feel fit to continue the journey safely," he advised.

According to accident management company Accident Exchange, the number of crashes on UK roads is likely to rise by 15 per cent in October as the summer weather gives way to heavy rain.
