Transport planning: Wales set for road safety boost

Transport planning bosses may welcome plans by the government in Wales to improve overnight parking on the region's trunk roads.

Ministers have accepted recommendations made by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) for an increase in the number of secure truck stops available.

The organisation has long argued for an improvement in facilities, which it claimed was necessary for drivers to take their legally-required rest periods safely.

Ian Gallagher, the FTA's policy manager for Wales, said: "A lack of safe and secure lorry parking facilities in Wales presents drivers with a real challenge as they look for appropriate places to stop.

Now that the Welsh assembly government have accepted there is a problem, the group looks forward to seeing "some actual results", he added.

Earlier this week, the FTA announced the launch of a new best practice guide to wheel security, offering transport planning chiefs advice on maintaining truck wheels.

The organisation said having a good wheel security procedure in place could help improve driver safety, reduce the risk of accidents and cut unnecessary costs.ADNFCR-1654-ID-19466081-ADNFCR
