Motorists should "make it a priority" to ensure their windscreens are clear and in good condition before they take to the roads this autumn, an expert has advised.
Automotive glazing services provider Auto Windscreens is urging drivers to wipe down their windows to avoid a potential accident - and a possible fine or jail sentence.
The organisation warned that failing to keep the windscreen clear could result in a £2,500 fine, penalty points or even 14 years behind bars in the event of a fatal smash.
Sales and marketing director Nigel Davies said more than 160 accidents on UK roads last year involved motorists driving with dirty or scratched windscreens.
He claimed drivers often tend to be complacent about ensuring good visibility, urging people to make windscreen cleaning a priority when it comes to car maintenance.
"Ensuring you, your windscreen and car are in good health this autumn could save your life and avoid you endangering the life of other road users," Mr Davies said.
According to accident management specialists Accident Exchange, the onset of autumn often gives rise to an increase in the number of collisions, as drivers struggle to adapt to wet weather and greasy road surfaces.
