Transport planning 'can avoid tyre damage'

Transport planning professionals can reduce the amount of damage to haulage vehicle tyres through a series of measures.

ATS Euromaster claimed 20 per cent of tyres fitted to fleet vehicles have to be replaced due to wear and tear, with wheels only working to 55 per cent of their potential capacity, Fleet World reported.

The firm's research found punctures, sidewall damage and drivers exceeding the 50 mph limit on deflated run-flat tyres were the main causes of the need for replacements.

Steve Bury, head of national cars at ATS Euromaster, said: "In many cases this damage could be avoided and we are actively encouraging fleet managers to cascade this information back to their company’s drivers."

The three main tips offered by the firm include selecting parking spots carefully to reduce the chance of punctures and checking tyres immediately if the pressure monitor warning light illuminates when using run-flat tyres.

Finally, the company advised against bumping wheels on the street when turning into a junction and leaving space between the tyres and the kerb when parking.

Meanwhile, TyreSafe advised motorists to check their wheels thoroughly before embarking on journeys this bank holiday.
