Transport planning chiefs face delay on Norfolk road decision

Wednesday, 16/9/2009 02:33
Transport planning chiefs operating in the Norfolk area will have to wait to find out if a series of road improvements will go ahead after the government delayed its decision.

According to the Norwich Evening News, ministers have asked for more work to be done on the plans for a Norwich northern bypass, which could help improve traffic flow in the region.

The proposed new road is part of a major strategy to develop the surrounding area, which also includes improvements to homes, schools and public transport.

However, the Department for Transport said more work was needed to test the effectiveness of the plans, with a final decision to be made by Christmas.

Adrian Gunson, cabinet member for planning and transportation at Norfolk county council, said he was disappointed by the delay.

"If the government wants the growth it does in areas such as Rackheath and Sprowston, then the road is needed," he insisted.

The news comes after the Freight Transport Association this week claimed the government must continue to invest in infrastructure if the UK economy is to prosper in the future.
