Transport planning chiefs 'should keep a check on tyre conditions'

Professionals responsible for logistics transport planning can help keep drivers safe and reduce damage to vehicles by keeping a regular check tyre conditions, it has been claimed.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), it is important to monitor factors such as tread depth, pressure and wear - especially when journeys are long or frequent.

The group revealed that some ten per cent of cars currently on the roads have at least one tyre with an illegal tread depth.

As well as the chance of landing a sizeable fine and points on their licence, this also puts drivers at greater risk of accident by reducing braking effectiveness, it pointed out.

Tim Shallcross, head of technical advice at the IAM, said: "As tyres have only the area of the sole of your shoe in touch with the road at any one time, it's a safety 'no-brainer' to keep them in top condition."

The guidance comes after research by ATS Euromaster last month revealed that 20 per cent of tyres fitted to fleet vehicles have to be replaced due to wear and tear.

According to Fleet World, the study revealed sidewall damage and a lack of maintenance to be the main factors behind the statistic.
